Environmental Safety and Impact of Sunscreens Containing Inorganic UV Filters

An adverse consequence of the use of sunscreens for photoprotection is the pollution of the environment by UV filters. The occurrence of inorganic UV filters in the environment is of concern due to their intrinsic properties, such as small sizes, chemistry, and photoreactivity and potential to bioaccumulate and interact with organisms in the environment. This chapter discusses the possible interactions and fate of inorganic UV filters in the environment and potential effects and toxicity to organisms residing there from different studies reported in the literature.
