Future Outlook

TiO2 and ZnO are widely used in sunscreen products. However, there are concerns related to the safety of sunscreens containing TiO2 and ZnO particles and on their potential environmental effects that could result in more stringent regulation of their use in sunscreens. Nevertheless, it is expected that TiO2 and ZnO UV filters will continue to play a prominent role in photoprotection applications especially as more organic UV filters lose favour. This chapter provides a number of achievable strategies that can be used to circumvent the undesirable features of TiO2 and ZnO and that would enable their continued use as UV filters in sunscreens.
