The research on the psychological components associated with hair disorders addresses a modern personalized patient-centered approach. This strategy aims to understand the disease in its complexity taking into account patients’ unique characteristics, dysfunctional emotional and behavioral patterns that contribute to or aggravate the hair condition, or result from the effect of trichopathology on patients’ mental sphere and quality of life. The connection between trichology and psychiatry is so multifaceted that trichologists and other healthcare professionals need a proper classification system in order to correctly understand and address patients’ problems, as well as choose the best therapeutic strategy. Authors in this review attempted to create a new classification system based on primary and secondary disorders, reflecting the relationship of trichodermatological and psychiatric symptoms. For effective management of psychotrichological cases, it is important for specialists working with these patients to expand their clinical horizons and improve their practical skills. In these cases, the clinical interview should include a thorough trichodermatological and psychiatric examination.
