Hirsutism and Hypertrichosis
摘要
Throughout the history of civilized mankind, overgrowth of hair has been of significant concern, the object of superstition and mystery, as well as of cosmetic and medical interest. Excessive hair may cause embarrassment, resulting in a significant emotional burden, particularly if extensive. Moreover, it must always be kept in mind that hair overgrowth, either hypertrichosis or hirsutism, may be a marker for a more general medical problem that may need serious investigation. Removal of unwanted hair is the most popular esthetic treatment worldwide. However, no single method of hair removal is appropriate for all patients or body locations. The chapter presents the unique historical, medical, and psychological aspects of excess hair growth, as well as a differentiated approach to management of the condition based on the cause, nature, area, and amount of excess hair growth, as well as the patient’s age and personal preference.
