Artificial Intelligence in Medical Imaging Technology at a Glance

This chapter provides a brief orientation to the nature of artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications in medical imaging technology. Firstly, definitions of AI and its subfields, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) are essential ingredients for understanding clinical applications. Secondly, the major features of AI, ML, and DL are described briefly, to emphasize the complexities of this subject matter. The third point is a fundamental overview of how AI works, followed by AI methods and its applications used in medical imaging technology, including a case study overview of the use of AI in computed tomography (CT) image reconstruction. Finally, the chapter concludes with a short exploration of the ethics of using AI in medical imaging.
