The physicochemical and biotic features of cavernous, subterranean environments are the focus of this chapter, and the faunas between sand grains of rivers are briefly discussed. Both the organisms and their food sources in caves are described. This chapter ends with a warning about precautions that should be undertaken by all explorers of these caverns.
