Lotic ecosystems are the focus of this chapter, with coverage from small streams to great rivers and from endorheic to permanent systems. Discussions include the physical nature of these systems, numbering by stream order, effects of dams and levees, river shapes and flow patterns, and the types of organism frequenting these aquatic environments.
