Topics in this chapter include the size, formation, and age of lentic systems from the massive Lake Baikal of Siberia to ephemeral lakes of the Great Plains. Why ice floats and the importance of seasonal lake turnover are described. Some of the docile and dangerous organisms of lentic systems are described, and their importance to food webs is investigated.
