Busy Beavers and Other Aquatic Architects

  • James H. Thorp

摘要

This chapter’s main focus is on the ecology and life history of beavers. Their roles as ecosystem engineers and keystone species are described along with smaller discussions of present and historical threats they face. The biology of some similar aquatic mammals is briefly evaluated. The architectural habits of net-building aquatic caddisflies and burrowing crayfish are also described.
