Suspended Solids Removal in Combined Carbon Oxidation, Nitrification, and Denitrification of Wastewater by Moving Bed Hybrid Bioreactor: Membrane Bioreactor System

This study investigates a membrane bioreactor (MBR) integrated with a moving bed hybrid bioreactor (MBHBR) to improve suspended solids removal during combined carbon oxidation, nitrification, and denitrification in wastewater treatment. Suspended solid in wastewater poses a challenge for high-quality effluent production. The MBHBR-MBR system demonstrated impressive suspended solids removal while effectively addressing carbonaceous compound removal, ammonia nitrification, and nitrate reduction. Integration of MBR and MBHBR enhanced overall treatment efficiency, making it suitable for wastewater treatment plants to comply with stringent effluent quality standards. Apart from that, the filtration performance of commercially available membrane (1 and 5 μ) in two membrane modules, i.e., external and internal, has been investigated, which shows efficient suspended solids and turbidity removal. Since concentration polarization and fouling may hamper the performance of membrane, the said two parameters are taken into consideration. The quality of final effluent from MBHBR-MBR system satisfies the requirements for reuse in most purposes.
