Effect of Anammox Bacteria for Synthetic Wastewater Treatment Containing Ammonia and Nitrite

摘要

Nitrogen gas can be produced by the anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (anammox) by oxidizing ammonia with nitrite. Anammox group of bacteria is being used to treat synthetic wastewater to expedite the traditional denitrification process after it was first discovered in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and then found in natural ecosystems such as marine, estuary, freshwater, and natural habitats. In our present study, seed sample was collected from the kitchen waste at CSIR-CMERI Durgapur, West Bengal. The objective is to study the growth pattern of anammox bacteria from kitchen waste for the treatment of nitrogenous (nitrite) contaminants in synthetic wastewater. Anammox is more affordable and environmentally friendly than conventional denitrification because it does not need aeration or organic carbon as input and lessens the production of greenhouse gases (such as CO₂ and N₂O). It was found that within 60 days of batch culture, ammonia with nitrite usage begins when the bacteria adapt to the new environment.
