Empowering Students as Agents of Change: Building a Culture of Sustainability in Higher Education Institutions

This chapter promotes the critical role that universities play in cultivating a sustainable culture and enabling students to be change agents. It starts out by explaining why sustainability must come first, pointing out the growing environmental problems and the urgent need for coordinated action. Emphasizing the transformative potential of incorporating Environmental and Sustainable Development (ESD) principles into educational curricula, the discourse centres around the role of education in sustainability. The chapter examines the implementation of ESD at educational institutions through a thorough analysis, highlighting the significance of ingraining sustainability ideals, knowledge and skills across disciplines. It also provides a compilation of recommended practices for developing sustainable environments in higher education institutions, including everything from waste management plans and energy efficiency campaigns to biodiversity preservation and eco-friendly transportation options. The chapter also emphasizes how student efforts can act as a catalyst to advance sustainability goals in higher education. Through the presentation of several instances of student-led initiatives and campaigns, emphasizes the effectiveness of grassroots action and group involvement in bringing about constructive transformation. These programmes cover a wide range of activities, such as advocacy campaigns, community gardens, renewable energy projects and sustainable food initiatives.
