Abutment Syndromes (AS)

The location at which two or more bones border and abut another may suffer from bone impaction. The bone marrow oedema and resulting spongiosa inflammation causes a local high signal on a T2-WI FS and a low signal on T1-WI. A primary AS is a consequence of the anatomical status, while a secondary AS results from deformed anatomical bony elements and/or disturbed interosseus relations. Ulnar abutment syndrome is the most common primary AS. Ulnotriquetral, stylotriquetral, hamatolunate quadrangular joint, and ulnar impingement are considered in this group as well. Secondary scapholunate abutment appears after laceration of the SL ligament with secondary increased mobility at the joint during radio-ulnar deviation. Also secondary ulnar, ulnotriquetral, stylotriquetral, hamatolunate, capitatolunar, and scaphoradial abutment are considered.
