Drug-Functionalized Nanoparticles for Clinical Applications

In this chapter, we have summarized the types of drug-functionalized nanoparticles (NPs) and their clinical applications. Focusing on the integration of nanotechnology in drug delivery systems (DDS), passive, active, and stimuli-responsive targeting strategies were discussed. Their role in optimizing drug efficacy, ensuring precise targeting, appropriate dosing, and minimized side effects, while also reducing the frequency of drug administration were presented. The paper highlights the intersection of nanoscience and medicine, illustrating how nanotechnology-enhanced DDS can revolutionize patient care, diagnostics, and treatment of diverse pathologies including cancer and drug-resistant infections. The variety of NPs employed in DDS, such as liposomes, micelles, and dendrimers, and their adaptability to different drug delivery routes were introduced. Nano-DDS that are under clinical trials were mentioned to highlight the shifting trends in the field. This comprehensive overview underscores the potential of drug-functionalized NPs to transform therapeutic modalities and offers insights into future advancements in this interdisciplinary field.
