My four year Canadian fellowship had ended and I needed to teach courses at Toronto for continued income. I thought I would stay there on the faculty, but the desired offer didn’t materialize. I needed to find a real job. An opportunity to apply to the University of Pennsylvania arrived in the mail one day. I interviewed there and during my visit learned about contemporary work by George Miller in Cognitive Science on representing verbs, which nicely paralleled my own intuitive approach to representing events. I get a faculty offer, accept it, and we move to Pennsylvania.
