The ANIML seminar eventually settled on the problem of animating textual instructions. This proved to be a rich domain of interest to multiple sponsors, including NASA and the Air Force. The latter had major problems and incentives to create human maintainer simulations. We exploit our own programming structure built on Jack, called Parallel Transition Networks, to organize the multiple parallel body actions and motions needed to execute tasks. We explore whole body motion sensing for maintenance tasks. Object-specific reasoning guides human actions for animations. We call our work task-based animation, to denote its importance to real activities.
