摘要

Biomass is a promising solution to energy and environmental challenges when used as a renewable resource for producing biofuel and high-value compounds. To enhance the effectiveness of the complex procedures involved in converting biomass into these products, irradiation-based treatments such as gamma irradiation and electron beam irradiation have become viable options. However, the exact mechanisms by which irradiation impacts the susceptibility of biomass remain multifaceted and not yet fully understood. This chapter takes a comprehensive approach to uncover the intricacies of how irradiation changes the structure, composition, and reactivity of biomass. Advanced analytical techniques, including spectroscopy, microscopy, and chromatography, are used to evaluate changes in lignocellulosic components like cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Additionally, the impact of irradiation on biomass microbial communities and enzymatic activities is explored to determine potential synergies or hindrances during subsequent conversion steps. Furthermore, this chapter emphasizes the significance of comprehending the mechanistic intricacies underlying the susceptibility of biomass to irradiation-based treatments. Such insights are crucial for optimizing biofuel and high-value compound production processes, promoting sustainable energy solutions, and advancing the utilization of biomass resources in a transformative manner. By understanding how irradiation affects biomass, we can strike a balance between favorable modifications and potential adverse effects, such as increased energy consumption or reduced biomass stability. This will facilitate the extraction of value-added compounds and promote higher biofuel yields, thereby promoting the use of biomass as a renewable energy source and contributing to a more sustainable future.
