Starting the Journey

I was born in Tallinn, Estonia on 1 August 1939, just before WWII. My parents both came from a small town in Southern Estonia. After living for about ten years in Riga they returned to Estonia and bought a house in the suburbs of Tallinn. Then the war started, Estonia was occupied and in 1941, my father was killed when the splinters of an accidental bomb reached our house. Later, after the war, my mother remarried.
