Investigation and Parametric Optimization of Abrasive Water Jet Machining of AA7075 Through Response Surface Methodology

In the fabrication sector, the need for high-quality machining parts with complex geometries has increased dramatically in recent years due to technological developments. When compared to other forms of cutting-edge machining technology, abrasive water jet machining stands out for the breadth and depth of its operations, the precision with which it cuts even the most complex profiles with only a small amount of force applied to the work piece, and the precision with which it returns dimensions. Aluminum alloys have gained significant attention as a highly promising material owing to their outstanding mechanical strength, especially in the field of hard-machined materials. In this investigation, aluminum alloys of AA7075 were tested at abrasive water jet machining for their performance. The three major cutting parameters like stand-off distance (SOD), abrasive feed (AF), and nozzle speed (NS) were varied to meet the better responses of material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness (SR). Response surface methodology (RSM) was utilized to optimize the three cutting parameters of abrasive water jet machining. The optimal cutting parameters were determined to be a SOD of 3 mm, an AF of 250 g/min, and a NS of 28 mm/min, with a resulting response of 0.1287 g/sec and 5.74 Ra.
