Cellulose Aerogels: Revolutionary Nanomaterials

Due to increasing environmental problems and the depletion of various energy resources like fossil fuels, we need sustainable and eco-friendly materials. Cellulose aerogels and 3D complex structures offer a wide range of benefits like high porosity and surface area, low density, strong mechanical behavior, etc. Cellulose aerogels can be modified in various ways making different hybrid and composite materials that open its horizon to several applications. Traditionally, it can be used like classic aerogels in adsorption and absorption, catalysis and electrochemistry, etc., and nowadays, it finds applications in the areas of biomedicine, drug transport systems, food industry, cosmetics, etc. This review focuses on the history of synthesis and various sustainable applications of cellulose aerogels.
