Study on Explosive Limits of Methane-Ammonia Fuels

Ammonia has the potential to replace traditional fossil fuels for transportation and power generation as a clean alternative fuel. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the utilization and safety of the mixed fuel of methane and ammonia. Through numerical simulation using detailed kinetics mechanism, the lower explosive limit and upper explosive limit of the mixed fuel were both calculated. Combustion processes of ammonia-methane mixture at different mixture composition and pressure conditions were analyzed. Results show that addition of ammonia can inhibit the explosion of methane at low concentration and improve the safety.
