Lichtenstein Tension-Free Open Inguinal Hernia Repair

The Lichtenstein hernia repair is a method for tension-free, mesh-based repair of inguinal hernias. It has been favored over tissue-based techniques because of low recurrence rates. Suturing mesh in Lichtenstein fashion does not place tissue under tension at suture lines and can be performed under local anesthesia. This chapter reviews the history of the Lichtenstein repair from inception to the present and describes in detail its operative steps. This chapter provides a comprehensive technical understanding of the operation, as well as an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of Lichtenstein hernia repair to better guide clinical practice.
