Total Abdominal Colectomy

Total abdominal colectomy (TAC) is removal of the ascending, transverse, descending colon, and sigmoid colon. Removal is indicated for both benign and malignant reasons, including Inflammatory Bowel Disease, cancer, fulminant colitis, as well as prophylactically for hereditary syndromes. TAC can be performed open, laparoscopically, or robotically. Minimally invasive techniques offer lower mortality and morbidity compared to open. Enhanced recovery pathway is beneficial is both urgent and elective TAC.
