Appendectomy

Appendectomy is the most common emergent surgical procedure performed worldwide and is among the seven procedures which account for 80% of the burden of operative emergency general surgery in the United States. Appendicitis is the most common indication for performing appendectomy. While open appendectomy is still indicated in specific situations, laparoscopic appendectomy results in improved patient outcomes and is considered standard of care for appendiceal resection.
