Small Bowel Resection and Anastomosis

Small bowel resection with primary anastomosis is a common procedure performed for many indications across all age groups. Several different techniques exist but all have similar outcomes so long as basic surgical principles are followed. The optimal approach (laparoscopic versus open) and technique (single versus double layer, stapled versus hand-sewn, side to side versus end to side/end to end) should be tailored to the surgical indication and the individual patient’s needs. Post-operatively, the patient should be monitored for complications including but not limited to: post-operative ileus, bowel obstruction, intra-abdominal abscess, anastomotic leak, and anastomotic stricture.
