How is mathematics put together?

In this chapter we run through the different components that give contemporary mathematics its specific shape and appearance. Firstly, mathematical thinking manifests itself as an innate property of the human intellect. The logic of this intellect is very probably nothing more than a refined form of adaptation to the reality in which it struggles to survive, more by ingenuity than instinct.
