From Discrimination to Triumph: The Evolving Landscape of Minority Rights in Egypt

This chapter conducts an in-depth examination of the evolving terrain of minority rights in Egypt. Anchored in constitutional provisions aimed at ensuring equality and nondiscrimination, the chapter explores the persistent challenges faced by religious and ethnic minority groups. Notwithstanding the presence of legal safeguards, discrimination continues to endure, underscoring systemic challenges and deeply ingrained societal attitudes. The Coptic Christian community, constituting a significant minority, grapples with enduring discrimination and barriers to the construction of places of worship. Other religious minorities, such as Baha’is and Shi’a Muslims, navigate challenges related to official recognition and sporadic persecution. Ethnic minority groups, like the Nubians and Bedouins, face unique complexities concerning displacement, land ownership, and political representation. The chapter underscores the overarching significance of minority rights in fostering inclusive and equitable societies, advocating for their safeguarding as foundational prerequisites for societal advancement.
