Constitutional Status of Religious Freedom in Egypt and Malaysia: A Cross-National Analysis

This chapter conducts a cross-national analysis of the constitutional status of religious freedom in Egypt and Malaysia, delving into the intricacies of legal provisions and their implications for social cohesion and individual liberties. Recognising the significance of religious autonomy in democratic societies, the chapter explores the constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion and their role in fostering tolerance, diversity and societal harmony. By examining the constitutional frameworks of Egypt and Malaysia, both Muslim-majority countries with distinct historical and cultural contexts, the chapter elucidates the complexities of governing religious diversity within legal frameworks. Despite constitutional protections, challenges persist in both nations, ranging from governmental restrictions on non-Muslim religious practices to societal prejudices against religious minorities. Through comparative analysis, this chapter enhances our understanding of the preservation of religious freedom globally, informing discussions on human rights and the role of the state in safeguarding individual liberties.
