The contamination of the environment by heavy metals resulting from industrial and mining activities poses a severe risk to all living organisms due to the enduring nature and toxicity of these metal ions. Bioremediation, particularly through microbial processes such as microbial biofilms, has emerged as a prominent and sustainable approach for mitigating heavy metal pollution. This method is favored for its perceived safety, effectiveness, and practicality in removing heavy metals from the environment. This chapter explores the intricate relationship between biofilm formation and microbial prospecting in the context of bioremediation. Biofilms are defined as complex matrices of microorganisms enveloped in extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and underscores their significance as natural habitats fostering microbial communities with enhanced bioremediation capabilities. Emphasizing the pivotal role of bioremediation in environmental cleanup, the chapter aims to understand the mechanisms of biofilm formation, exploring various strategies for microbial prospecting, and examining applications of biofilm-linked bioremediation.
