摘要

In recent years, significant progress has been made in the development of bio-based polymer packaging films as a response to the environmental challenges posed by non-biodegradable materials. Chitosan, the second most abundant biopolymer after cellulose, has gained attention for its biocompatibility, biodegradability, antimicrobial properties, and ease of film formation. Chitosan, a biodegradable and non-toxic natural polymer, is extensively used in the food and biomedical industries because of its outstanding bioactivities and biocompatibility. Chitosan, a well-studied biopolymer, has been found to prolong the shelf life of fresh vegetables, seafood, and meat products. Adding nanoparticles and phytochemicals to chitosan enhances its mechanical, barrier, and antibacterial properties, thereby improving food quality and shelf life. Several studies have highlighted the significant impact of bioactive compounds on the mechanical, barrier, and functional attributes of chitosan films. Applying chitosan-based films in food packaging, including antibacterial, barrier, and sensing films, has shown significant advancements. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the recent progress in the preparation, extraction, and application of chitosan-based nanomaterial in the field of food packaging.
