Mechanical Properties of Organic Nanomaterials for Food Packaging

This chapter focuses on the mechanical properties of organic nanomaterials, specifically their potential use in food packaging. As consumers increasingly demand safer and more sustainable packaging options, organic nanomaterials offer promising solutions due to their unique characteristics. The chapter overviews organic nanomaterials commonly used in food packaging, including carbon-based nanomaterials, protein-based nanomaterials, cellulose nanocrystals, chitosan nanoparticles, and nanostarch. The mechanical properties of these materials, such as tensile strength, elasticity, toughness, flexibility, and barrier properties, are also discussed. In addition, the chapter examines how these properties are measured. By providing a comprehensive analysis, this chapter aims to offer valuable insights into the potential of organic nanomaterials for enhancing the mechanical performance of food packaging. Ultimately, this could contribute to developing safer and more sustainable packaging solutions.
