Nano-emulsions, particularly those infused with wax and essential oils, offer a promising avenue for enhancing food preservation through edible coatings. These nanoemulsions, consisting of finely dispersed oil droplets in a water-based solution, have the potential to revolutionize food preservation by creating protective barriers on food surfaces. This approach may extend shelf life, reduce moisture loss, inhibit microbial growth, and mitigate oxidation. This study focuses on utilizing wax and essential oil-based nanoemulsions as edible coatings to improve food quality and safety. The research explores various factors affecting the formulation and application of these nanoemulsions, including emulsifier selection, processing optimization, and precise parameter adjustment. Moreover, the study investigates how wax and essential oil nanoemulsions interact with different food matrices, revealing their adaptability to diverse culinary scenarios. An important aspect of this research is the integration of bioactive compounds into protective coatings, potentially enhancing food safety, longevity, flavor, and overall consumer experience. Despite challenges related to scalability, costs, and regulatory compliance, the potential benefits of using wax and essential oil nano-emulsions as edible coatings are significant. These benefits align well with the food industry’s ongoing pursuit of sustainable and natural food preservation methods.
