Wartime Exchange and Repatriation

Anglo-ItalianItalian prisoner exchanges took place between April 1942 and September 1943 and included POWs from ItalyItaly, BritainBritain and its empireempire. The reciprocal repatriations involved sick and woundedsick and wounded prisoners of war who had been assessed and passed medically unfit by a mixed medical commissionmixed medical commission appointed to examine the prisoners in POWPOW campsPOW camps. Wartime repatriations were rare; however, when they did happen, the exchanges required significant negotiation by belligerent governments through the protecting power.
