Analyzing Grade Inflation in Engineering Education

Grade inflation is a complex phenomenon observed predominantly in institutions like the Tecnológico de Monterrey and English-speaking universities, with sporadic instances in certain European regions. Its causes are multifaceted, ranging from competition among universities for prestigious opportunities to shifts in teaching and evaluation methods. Efforts to curb grade inflation, such as limiting grade distribution and publishing course averages, have had mixed success. We carry out both ChatGPT led and traditional bibliographical research to understand its causes, identify successful strategies, and adopt a collaborative, systemic approach that can effectively control grade inflation without compromising teaching standards or exacerbating student stress.
