It’s a Process: Best Practice in Preventing Crime and Disorder in Public Places

This final shorter chapter focuses on the design and implementation side of crime prevention programs. A major theme of the book is that a wide variety of strategies can be deployed to make large reductions in crime and disorderDisorder, and to improve people’s feelings of security and their peaceful use of public spaces. A key issue, however, is how to select and manage those strategies most likely to be effective. To do this, a best practice process model of crime prevention has emerged, primarily generated from the many successful case studies on the record—and, to some extent, from the unsuccessful cases. Primary features of this methodology include comprehensive diagnostics, consultation, committee management, appointment of a project manager, full implementation, evaluation, modification and maintenance. Incorporating the interests of marginalised groups—ensuring inclusion and supporting diversity—should also be a fundamental consideration.
