Genesis of Chinese Porcelain and the Western Trade

The genesis of Chinese porcelain manufacture is discussed. The establishment of the trade routes and early contact with Western Europe is traced. Development in decorative techniques is considered. The early trade with the Portuguese, and the first armorial commission by Manuel I of Portugal is described. The Dutch East India Company and the establishment of the English East India Company is considered. The role of King William and Queen Mary in setting the fashion for blue and white porcelains is discussed, as is the role of the imported drinks punch, coffee, chocolate and tea in creating demand for ceramics.
