This chapter revolves around the conceptual debate over migration film festivals. The spectrum of definitions of film festivals and their categorisation is rich, as they have been explored from multidimensional perspectives, considering their connections to culture, the market or the public, among many others. The central theoretical approach of this work revolves around the social functions of migration film festivals, which act as public spaces for witnessing, negotiating, and transforming. We will problematise migration film festivals through the concept of ‘social profitability’, rather than acquiring an economistic vision, which normally bases the ‘success’ of each project on numbers and figures. In this undertaking, social functions are involved within the assumption that film festivals entail the ability to become true axes of critical reflection and social transformation towards more empathetic, inclusive, and respectful ways of life. In addition, however, it resonates with initiatives that democratically build a link with their territories through social networks and artistic and political participation.
