Unveiling the Complexity of Herbal Medicine: Safety, Toxicity, and Regulatory Challenges

  • Menka Khoobchandani

摘要

Herbal medicine has a rich history spanning centuries, serving as a traditional approach to healthcare in various cultures worldwide. The allure of herbal remedies lies in their natural origins and the perception of minimal side effects compared to synthetic pharmaceuticals. Nonetheless, recent concerns regarding safety and toxicity have necessitated a closer examination of its risks and benefits. One significant challenge lies in the variability of herbal medicine composition and potency, unlike pharmaceutical drugs, which undergo stringent testing and standardization. This inherent variability increases the unpredictability of herbal remedies’ effects and heightens the risk of adverse reactions. Regulatory frameworks governing herbal products vary widely between countries, ranging from stringent oversight to more lax regulations. Consequently, there have been mounting calls for enhanced regulation to ensure the safety and quality of herbal medicines. This research article delves into the toxicity associated with herbal medicine and critically evaluates the adequacy of current regulatory measures. By analyzing available evidence on the safety and efficacy of herbal remedies and examining the challenges in regulating their use, this study seeks to provide valuable insights for policymakers, healthcare professionals, and consumers alike, fostering informed decision-making regarding the potential risks and benefits of herbal medicine.
