In this book, we will study many complex algebras which are simultaneously Banach spaces and rings with continuous operations. Some arise as algebras of linear operators, but others occur in other settings or even have an abstract definition. Many of the ideas that apply to bounded operators apply more generally. In this chapter, we look at a few examples and explore the spectrum and an analytic functional calculus.
