Completeness of various normed vector spaces is the foundation of functional analysis. We shall see that this property is critical at many points of the theory. For example, completeness is critical to the results which rely on the Baire category theorem. The study of linear functionals is basic, and gives functional analysis its name. The Hahn–Banach theorem is the cornerstone result.
