Since the death of George Floyd in 2020, a number of black activists have risen to centre stage and taken their places within the world of psychology, counselling, and psychotherapy as standard bearers for our professions. Much like any other activist, I Dr Dwight Turner, have played a role in this vanguard movement. Yet, there has been an impact. From my own experience the personal cost of being a black activist within our professions, I have come across a number of stories of fellow activists whose mental health has been impacted by the levels of vitriol and hatred meted against them from both within and without our profession. This heuristic exploration looks at what it is to be a black activist, the role, the pitfalls, the pain, as well as explores the internal depths of colonial messaging which need to be addressed on this ongoing journey of black activism. Considerations of the roles of internalised hate and anger, and the role of community and its separation from the colonisers’ ideas of the individual are measured, with this being conducted using creative methods designated by Moustakas, as well as the dreamwork and other means.
