Theoretical and International Perspectives on Sustainable Futures

This chapter explores theoretical and international perspectives on sustainable futures, focusing on ecological economics, social ecology, and environmental justice. Sustainable development is analysed through environmental preservation, social justice, and economic viability lenses. Ecological economics challenges traditional paradigms by emphasizing the finite nature of planetary resources and prioritizing long-term resilience over short-term profit. Social ecology examines the links between societal structures and environmental degradation, advocating decentralized and democratic means to harmonize human communities with the natural world. Environmental justice addresses the disproportionate environmental harm experienced by marginalized communities, promoting equitable distribution of environmental risks and benefits. The Green New Deal (GND) is presented as a policy framework that integrates these theoretical approaches to address climate change and economic inequality. By incorporating the principles of ecological economics, social ecology, and environmental justice, the GND offers a holistic approach to sustainable development. This chapter highlights the necessity of international cooperation and the exchange of best practices to achieve global sustainability goals. The synthesis of these frameworks reveals that sustainable futures depend on reimagining economic development, fostering social inclusivity, and preserving environmental integrity. The chapter emphasizes the importance of innovative governance structures, equitable resource distribution, and a redefined relationship between humanity and the natural world. By moving beyond siloed approaches and embracing interconnected strategies, pathways towards sustainable futures can be effectively forged.
