Transanal Minimally Invasive Surgery TAMIS

The management of patients with early rectal cancer has shifted towards organ-preserving options. These patients who would have traditionally undergone radical surgery for these early lesions may now be managed via local excision for curative intent. Transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) is an advanced endoscopic platform that may be used for curative intent local excision for select patients with early rectal cancer. We have described the indications, surgical technique, perioperative care, and potential complications of this technique. Current data suggests that resection quality and local recurrence rates are comparable to transanal endoscopic microsurgery. For carefully selected patients, TAMIS for local excision of rectal neoplasia is a valid option with low morbidity that maintains the advantages of organ preservation.
