Epilogue

This last chapter reiterates a key aim of Global City Dilemmas and Anglophone Singapore Literature which is to underscore the contingent nature of the global and the idea of Singapore as a ‘global city’ in terms of a positioning rather than a settled status. Being a global city is a contested and continually evolving identity formation that sees contribution from non-state actors such as Singapore’s multiply-located writers, cultural producers, intellectuals as well as its non-permanent residents. Singapore writers examine and represent minority and marginalized experiences, the unfinished business of decolonization, historical silences, and alternative cosmopolitanisms as part of dynamic cultural negotiations with national state directives as well as other transnational pressures and ideals.
