The Socioscientific Issues Framework as a Tool to Enhance Health Education Within the Life Sciences Curriculum in South Africa

South Africa faces significant challenges with science literacy as evidenced by inadequate application of scientific knowledge to everyday challenges, including health crises such as HIV/AIDS and COVID-19. Addressing these challenges requires adopting a science education framework that integrates scientific knowledge with ethical, societal, and cultural dimensions to combat misinformation and stigma related to health issues. This chapter aims to demonstrate how the Socioscientific Issues (SSI) framework can transform Life Sciences education, fostering an informed and critically engaged youth. We argue for urgency in adopting the SSI framework in subjects such as Life Sciences, highlighting how, in the absence of such a framework, poor science literacy, misinformation, and stigma exacerbated HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 crises. Additionally, the SSI framework that addresses real-world issues by drawing on lessons from past and existing health crises could prevent potential future health crises. Furthermore, adapting Life Sciences education to the SSI framework could enhance socioscientific reasoning and promote the adoption of safe behavioral practices among the youth. However, we note several barriers to SSI implementation, including the lack of specialized teacher training, difficulties in navigating ethical, societal, and cultural intricacies, and conflicting education priorities that favor traditional scientific content over socioscientific reasoning. These barriers must be addressed to effectively integrate the SSI framework into Life Sciences education and realize its potential benefits.
