Photonic Integrated Filter in Silicon Nitride Technology for High-Performance Microwave Photonics Applications

We report the characterization of a waveguide optical filter designed for RF scanning operation. The filter is based on a 2nd-order microring resonator-assisted balanced Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) and realized in silicon nitride (SiN) technology. Through careful optimization of the design layout, filter transmission bandwidth down to 2 GHz with a flatness lower than 0.5 dB, and record values of free-spectral range and out-of-band rejection of 36 GHz and 57 dB, respectively, are observed.
