Understanding the Motivations for Water Reuse in a Developing Economy: The Case of Ghana

This paper explores the motivations for adopting water-smart solutions in Ghana, focusing on the interplay of regulatory, economic, reputational, and environmental factors influencing various actors. By examining governance challenges and opportunities through key informant interviews, participatory workshops, and engagements with ministries, the study reveals a complex landscape driving the pursuit of sustainable water management practices. Despite the potential of water-smart innovations to address urbanization and resource scarcity challenges, their adoption is hindered by multifaceted barriers. The findings highlight the need for integrated governance approaches that foster a conducive environment for water-smart solutions, emphasizing the role of incentives, awareness creation, and stakeholder engagement in facilitating sustainable urban and agricultural practices.
