Trauma Focused Therapy in Bipolar Disorder: Adapting CBT and EMDR

摘要

Bipolar disorder is linked to high levels of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and childhood abuse. This chapter outlines adaptations for trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and eye movement desensitization reprocessing therapy for trauma in this group. Psychological mechanisms linking trauma and bipolar disorder and how to assess these and integrate into formulations are discussed. There is currently limited evidence for the effectiveness of trauma-focused therapies in this group. Recommendations on considerations and adaptations to therapy in this population, such as an increased focus on stabilization via relapse prevention planning prior to trauma work, are discussed. Specific CBT and EMDR techniques to be used are also outlined, with a case study to illustrate these points.
