Culturally Relevant and Sustaining Pedagogies: Theoretical Underpinnings, Practical Value and Implications for Teacher Education
摘要
While the ideas of multicultural education are relatively well-known in Northern Europe, existing research indicates that school personnel, including teachers, often fall short in leveraging the theoretical principles successfully for practical application. This chapter bridges the gap between theory and practice by synthesising findings from contemporary research to explore the impact of culturally relevant and sustaining pedagogies on the identity formation of young people in the globalised world. Furthermore, the chapter aspires to guide readers through the intricate landscape of multicultural education by furnishing them with a nuanced understanding of theories related to culturally relevant and responsive pedagogies, as well as the shift towards practices emphasising cultural sustainability in educational environments.
