Exploring the Effects of Russia-Ukrainian Conflict in Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) in Zimbabwe

The Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has spawned a surge in global food prices and disruption of world markets and supply chains, has been a wake-up call for Zimbabwe on the need to ensure food security. Zimbabwe is a landlocked nation in Southern Africa with a food deficit. Some areas of Zimbabwe are subject to food insecurity due to a series of droughts and subsequent low harvests, which has led to a greater reliance on imports and food aid. The article utilized expansive literature on the SDGs, United Nations and World Health documents, newspapers, journal articles and textbooks on the effects of Russi-Ukraine conflict on attaining Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG) in Zimbabwe. Qualitative thematic analysis based on documents was employed in this article. The results established that the consequences of the war on food security in Zimbabwe are being exacerbated by a variety of underlying rigidities, vulnerabilities, and inefficiencies in global food systems. The article concludes that a transition toward healthy, equitable, and ecologically sustainable food systems must be strengthened by adopting urgent and long-term reforms and policies. The study recommends an investment in the areas of food policy and energy sector that will contribute to African self-reliance in a complex global geopolitical context.
